Stratford BID has Saturday 14 November 2026. The operator has published 10am to 7pm, dropped Waterside from the footprint, and put the switch at 5pm not 5.30.

Stratford-upon-Avon’s Christmas lights switch-on is on Saturday 14 November 2026. The date is published by Stratford BID, which funds and organises the event, on its switch-on page.

That page carries the date and a poster, uploaded in August, and nothing else. No start time, no programme, no road closure.

The detail is published, but not by the BID. It is on the trade side of the event operator’s website, where LSD Promotions recruits its stallholders for Christmas 2026.

What the operator has published for 2026

  • Trading times: 10am to 7pm, on Saturday 14 November.
  • The market footprint is Bridge Street, Wood Street and Henley Street. Henley Street pitches are on the Bridge Street side only, up to the corner of Meer Street.
  • Waterside is out this year. In the operator’s words, “Waterside will not form part of this year’s event footprint”, a decision taken “following review of the 2025 event layout” to keep the site manageable “for crowd management and public safety during peak attendance periods”. Waterside carried stalls in 2023 and 2025, so this is a real change to how the day looks.
  • The illuminations are supplied by The Christmas Light Company.
  • Trader pitches are gone: the page is marked “EVENT FULL”.

One number on that page does not match the last two years. The operator tells traders that visitor numbers build “particularly around the 5pm lights switch-on”. The switch was at 5.30pm in both 2023 and 2025. Half an hour is enough to matter if you have small children out in the cold, so treat 5pm as the operator’s figure and 5.30pm as the recent pattern, and wait for the BID’s programme before you plan around either.

Last year, for the shape of the day

Every one of these figures is 2025’s, not 2026’s. Take them as a guide to how the day usually runs, not as this year’s schedule.

The 2025 switch-on was on Saturday 15 November. The Stratford Herald, writing on 13 November, said entertainment on the stage at the top of Wood Street began at 1pm and the lights came on at 5.30pm. It also reported that the display cost about £70,000, paid for by local business donations and a Stratford Town Council grant, and that the lights are turned on electronically by a phone message sent to modules in waterproof cabinets around the town centre. The Royal Shakespeare Company’s BFG Christmas tree trail launched the same evening.

Go back to 2023, the fortieth switch-on, and the day was bigger: free entertainment from 10am to 7pm, the switch at 5.30pm, a giant snow globe and ice cave, market stalls, choirs, stilt walkers and a fire performer, across Henley Street, Wood Street, Meer Street, High Street and Bridge Street.

The 5.30pm switch-on time held in both of those years, which is why the operator’s “5pm” is worth flagging rather than repeating. Until the BID publishes this year’s running order, be in town by 5pm and you are covered either way.

Road closures

Nothing is published for 2026. The district council’s list of road closures was last updated on 17 March 2026 and runs to the end of December without a single switch-on entry, so the order for 14 November has not been advertised yet.

Last year’s order, published by the council on 14 November 2025, closed these streets from 4am to 10pm on the day:

  • Rother Street, from the memorial fountain to the junction with Meer Street and Wood Street
  • Wood Street
  • Meer Street
  • Henley Street
  • Bridge Street
  • High Street, with a one way system in place

That is a long closure for a 5.30pm event, and it is the detail most people get caught by. If you drive into the town centre on switch-on Saturday, the streets above are gone from before dawn.

Parking and buses

The town centre car parks are not usually part of the switch-on closure. Current tariffs are on our Stratford parking page: £1.40 an hour, £13.90 for 24 hours, with the first hour free at Bridgeway.

If you use the Park and Ride at Bishopton, note that its buses normally pick up and drop off outside NatWest on Wood Street, and Warwickshire County Council says that when Wood Street or Bridge Street are closed for a town centre event the buses use Windsor Street Coach Park instead. Wood Street was inside last year’s switch-on closure. Saturday Park and Ride hours are 9am to 6pm, which ends before the lights come on, so check the Stagecoach timetable if you plan to stay for the evening. Parking at the site is £3 before 8.59am and £1 from 9am.

Is it on this year?

Yes. The BID has the date on its own website and put the 2026 artwork up in August. What has not appeared is the timetable, and on last year’s pattern that comes out in the week or two before the event. We will update this page as soon as the BID publishes times and the council advertises the closure.

The town’s Victorian Christmas Market is a separate event a fortnight later, on 28 and 29 November and 5 and 6 December.
