Stratford Roadworks: A46 Shuts at M40 J15, Two Nights

The A46 closes on two nights next week at the junction Stratford uses for the motorway. National Highways has booked the northbound carriageway between Warwick and M40 junction 15 for Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, 9pm to 6am. Last week’s report held no A46 closure near Stratford at all.

The motorway loses a slip road on the same four nights. The M40 southbound junction 15 entry slip closes from 10.15pm to 6am on Monday 21, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September. Both jobs sit on the same route out of town towards Warwick and the M40.

In town, the Food Festival closure runs to 10pm on Sunday. Bridge Street, Henley Street and Meer Street are shut all day today and through tomorrow, and Waterside goes as well on Sunday, 9am to 6pm, for the Upmarket.

Then the main road out to the south-west goes to nights. The B439 Bordon Hill and Evesham Road at Dodwell closes for resurfacing between 8pm and 6am on weeknights, from Monday 28 September to Saturday 10 October.

The longest closure in the district starts the same day. Grafton Lane at Bidford-on-Avon closes on 28 September for water main replacement, with an anticipated completion of 1 March 2027.

What is shut right now

• Bridge Street, Henley Street and Meer Street, Stratford. Closed for the Food Festival for the whole of today and until 10pm tomorrow. Waterside joins them on Sunday, 9am to 6pm, for the Upmarket.
• D5571 Watery Lane, Sherbourne, on the A429 between Stratford and Warwick. Closed from its junction with the A429 for 120 metres northwards for drainage maintenance, from 14 September, with an anticipated completion of 25 September. The signed diversion is the A429 Stratford Road. Sherbourne is in Warwick district, not this one, but the closure sits on the Stratford to Warwick road.
• B4035 Campden Road, Shipston-on-Stour. Closed between its junctions with Norgren Crescent and Queens Avenue for footway reconstruction, weekdays only, 9.30am to 3.30pm, since 14 September. The order’s anticipated completion is 9 October 2026. The signed diversion runs via Campden Road, the A429 Fosse Way and Darlingscott Road, and access to and from adjoining roads may be restricted while work is in progress.
• C52 Dassett Road and Village Road, Northend. Still marked ongoing on the county’s footway resurfacing programme, rechecked today, with no completion date published. It closes between Peartrees and Burton Hills Road, 9.30am to 3.30pm on weekdays only, diverting via Bottom Street, Blacksmiths Lane, Northend Road, Knightcote Road, the B4451 Gaydon Road, the B4100 Banbury Road and Dassett Road.
• Elm Close, Ilmington. Also still ongoing on the same programme. We reported this as finished on 5 September, on the strength of its order having expired; that was wrong and the correction stands at the foot of this page.
• B4086 Tiddington Road, the main road east out of Stratford, remains ongoing as a minor carriageway scheme with no dates attached.
• Public Footpath AL110 at Morton Bagot is closed on public safety grounds because of the condition of a bridge on its route, from 20 August for up to six months. The signed alternative is Public Footpaths 229/AL110a/1 and 229/AL110a/2.
• Public Bridleway SM191 at Upper Lighthorne and Public Footpath SM175A at Radway remain closed for works, both from 15 August for up to six months.
• The Park and Stride canal towpath route from the park and ride into town is still closed because of a landslip. The district council’s park and ride page, rechecked today, still directs walkers along Timothy’s Bridge Road.

Walton Park Road at Wellesbourne passed its anticipated completion date on 14 September and no later order has been advertised for it. Nothing published since either confirms it has reopened or extends it, so we still cannot say either way.

Three short closures have run their course since our last check, all of them single day jobs ordered for 17 September: carriageway patching at Ford Hills, Brightwell Road and Whichford Road at Ascott, a defective manhole cover on St Laurence Way at Bidford-on-Avon, and patching on Stileman Close at Lower Quinton. The M40 junction 16 exit slip closure at Hockley Heath also ran on Thursday night and is done.

The A46 comes back, and junction 15 goes four nights running

National Highways reissues its seven-day closure report twice a day on working days. The edition covering Friday 18 to Thursday 24 September was read in full for this page, all seven daily sheets.

After a week with nothing on the A46 near Stratford, it holds two nights of it, both on the same scheme, described in the report as “A46 northbound Warwick to M40 Jct 15, carriageway closure for maintenance works”.

• Wednesday 23 September, 9pm to 6am: the A46 northbound Sherbourne link road closes.
• Thursday 24 September, 9pm to 6am: the A46 northbound from M40 junction 15, including the exit slip and the roundabout, through to the A46 entry slip road.

The report gives the diversion for both only as “via National Highways”, with no roads named, which is all it publishes for this scheme.

On the motorway itself, the M40 southbound junction 15 entry slip at Longbridge closes on four nights running, Monday 21 to Thursday 24 September, 10.15pm to 6am. That is the junction most Stratford traffic uses, and it is the slip road onto the motorway heading south towards Banbury, not the motorway itself. Lane closures run on to junction 14.

Together those bookings put work on the A46, the junction 15 roundabout and the southbound slip on the same two nights, Wednesday and Thursday. If you are driving towards Warwick or the M40 late on either night, the alternative is the A439 Warwick Road and the A429.

The weekend dip is the normal pattern. National Highways front-loads work onto weeknights, so a Saturday or Sunday drive of any distance meets roughly a third as many closures as a Monday one.

The A46 appears all over that report, and almost none of it is ours. The entries at Brough, Doddington, Hill Holt, Norton Disney and Farndon are on the Lincolnshire A46 around Newark. Shurdington and Alexandra Way are the Gloucestershire A46 at the M5. The A46 southbound from the M69 junction to Walsgrave, closed on Wednesday and Thursday nights, is a real Warwickshire closure but it is at Coventry, about 20 miles from Stratford. Only the Warwick to junction 15 scheme is within reach of this district.

The Food Festival order is longer than the festival

The district council’s Temporary Traffic Regulation (Road Closure No. 25) Order 2026 is made under section 21 of the Town Police Clauses Act 1847, and it runs across three dates rather than two.

• Friday 18 September: Bridge Street, Henley Street and Meer Street closed from 2pm to 11.59pm
• Saturday 19 September: the same three streets closed for the whole day, which is where we are now
• Sunday 20 September: closed from midnight until 10pm

The festival itself is shorter. Stratford-upon-Avon BID, which runs it, gives the trading hours as 10am to 6pm on the Saturday and 10am to 5pm on the Sunday, on Henley Street and Bridge Street. Its page was rechecked this morning and carries no change or cancellation. The Friday afternoon and the late Sunday evening are build-up and clear-down, and Meer Street is in the order even though it is not in the festival footprint.

Breaching the order is an offence carrying a fine of up to £1,000.

If you are driving in on the Sunday, allow for both closures. Waterside is shut 9am to 6pm for the Upmarket on the same day, so the whole river frontage and the top of Bridge Street are out together. The Bridgeway multi-storey is reached from Bridgefoot and stays open.

The B439 at Dodwell: nights, for a fortnight

This is the closure worth planning around. The B439 Bordon Hill and Evesham Road is the road from Stratford out towards Bidford-on-Avon and Evesham, and it is being resurfaced overnight from Monday 28 September to Saturday 10 October, 8pm to 6am, weeknights only, with no weekend working.

The county’s legal order closes it between the Bordon Hill roundabout (Whittington Way and Luddington Road) and Luddington Lane. The letter sent to residents describes the site differently, as running from Dodwell Caravan Park westwards towards Bidford for 1,240 metres. Neither document corrects the other, so both are printed here.

The signed diversion is long, because there is no short way round:

• Clockwise: B439 Evesham Road, Stratford Road, Tower Hill and Salford Road, then the A46, the A3400 Birmingham Road, the A4390 through Arden Street, Grove Road and Evesham Place, and back onto the B439
• Anti-clockwise: B439 Bordon Hill and Evesham Road, the A4390 through Evesham Place and Grove Road, the A422 Alcester Road, the A46, then the B439 through Salford Road, Tower Hill, Stratford Road and Evesham Road

The resident letter sets out the phasing: surfacing out and first course from Monday 28 September to Thursday 1 October, ironwork on Friday 2 October, then the final surface and road markings from Monday 5 to Friday 9 October.

The county files this scheme under a different village. Its forward programme lists file reference SMU/0103 as B439 Evesham Road at Luddington, and the same reference appears on the resident letter for the Dodwell works. It is one scheme, not two. A separate footway job on the B439 at Dodwell is programmed for 21 September.

Coming in the next fortnight

Most of the closures below are weekday daytime jobs, 9.30am to 3.30pm, and the dates given are the anticipated completion in each order rather than the legal ceiling.

Three things in that list are worth a second look.

Grafton Lane at Bidford-on-Avon is a five-month closure. The order runs from 28 September with an anticipated completion of 1 March 2027 for water main replacement, and the signed diversion goes the long way round by Grafton Lane, Wixford Road, Evesham Road and Stratford Road. No village in the district loses a road for longer this year.

Snitterfield loses The Green twice in three days. Two separate contractors have orders for the same street, one on 23 and 24 September for a water meter and boundary box, the other on 25 September for a manhole cover. The diversions are not the same either: the first sends traffic round The Square, Bearley Road and Birmingham Road, the second out to the Stratford Northern Bypass and the A46.

Sherbourne has two orders on the same short stretch of Watery Lane. One is a made order for drainage maintenance, running from 14 September to an anticipated 25 September, closing the road for 120 metres north of the A429. The other is a proposed order for mains renewal from 21 September to 11 October. The reasons and the dates are different, so they are two jobs, not one entry published twice.

One of the patching closures has no diversion at all. The order for Rookery Lane and Park View Lane at Newbold on Stour says no suitable alternative route is available, with access maintained only as the works allow. The Bushwood bridleway closure says the same.

Warwickshire writes every temporary order to last up to 18 months even when the job takes a day, so the “up to 18 months” wording is a legal ceiling and not a forecast. Read the anticipated completion date instead.

Four changes you can still object to

• A crossing on Darlingscote Road, Shipston-on-Stour. The county proposes a parallel crossing on a flat top road hump near Hay Meadow, to meet a planning condition on the new food store approved under district application 24/00528/FUL. Objections must be in writing, must specify the grounds, and must reach Alex Williams, Engineering Design Services, Communities Directorate, PO Box 43, Shire Hall, Warwick CV34 4SX, or alexwilliams@warwickshire.gov.uk, by 1 October 2026. The plan can be seen at Shire Hall and at the district council’s offices in Church Street, Stratford. The notice is dated 4 September.
• No waiting at any time outside Stratford High School. The county proposes double yellow lines on Alcester Road, from a point 25 metres east of the school entrance westwards for 54 metres. Objections go to the County Highways Minor Works Team at Shire Hall or to pmc@warwickshire.gov.uk under the heading “Stratford V13”, by 25 September 2026.
• A lower speed limit on the B4451 Kineton Road, Southam. The existing 40mph limit would be extended over a 184-metre stretch of what is now 50mph, starting 481 metres south of the Westfield Road junction. Objections under the heading “B4451 Kineton Road”, also by 25 September 2026.
• Stopping up a bridleway at Southam for HS2. The Department for Transport has given notice of a proposal to stop up and divert a length of bridleway SM116 at Southam, under section 247 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. The order would authorise it only to enable development granted under section 20 of the High Speed Rail (London to West Midlands) Act 2017. The draft order and plan can be seen for 28 days from 11 September at Upper Boddington Post Office and at Fenny Compton Post Office. Objections must state their reasons in writing and quote NATTRAN/WM/S247/6374, to nationalcasework@dft.gov.uk or the Transport Infrastructure Planning Casework Unit, PO Box 1393, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE99 5FQ, by midnight on 9 October 2026.

Both 25 September deadlines are now six days away.

A fourth change is already done. From 7 September, eight bays on the north side of Chestnut Walk in Stratford became electric vehicles only, pay and display, two hours with no return within four, 8am to 6pm, except permit holders. The matching proposal for eight bays on the east side of High Street in Henley-in-Arden was withdrawn before the order was made.

Where to check what is shut today

• County roads: Warwickshire County Council publishes a live map of works and closures at warwickshire.gov.uk/roadworksmap. Zoom in rather than searching. The same council page carries an email alert sign-up for works near an address you choose.
• The A46 and M40: these are National Highways roads, not county roads, so county listings do not cover them. Check National Highways travel updates.
• Event closures in town: Stratford-on-Avon District Council keeps a dated list of road closures for markets and events, and Stratford-upon-Avon Town Council posts individual closure notices as they are made.
• Forward resurfacing: the county’s Stratford-on-Avon future works programme lists carriageway and footway schemes with dates, often months ahead. It runs to three pages, and pages two and three carry the residential streets.

Closures already in the diary

These are dated and published, not forecasts. The list starts after the fortnight table above.

All three pages of the county’s programme were reread today, and nothing on them has moved since our last check: the same three schemes are marked ongoing, the same three are TBA, Campden Road at Clifford Chambers is still cancelled and no new completion has been recorded. That matters because it means no date in the table below has quietly shifted.

Alne Bank in Alcester has a notice as well as a programme date, and the two do not say the same thing: the programme gives 5 October, the notice gives 5 to 16 October and covers both the odd and the even side of the road, weekdays 8am to 5pm. When the two disagree, the notice is the newer document.

Five schemes were marked completed earlier this month: the footways at Wattons Lane in Southam, Church Street at Bishop’s Itchington, and Church Road and Bearley Road at Snitterfield, and the minor carriageway scheme at Deppers Bridge on the B4451.

Two entries in the table are not county resurfacing schemes. Tavern Lane is a town-centre closure notice the town council published on 8 September, giving the dates but saying only that more information is to follow. The Mop Fair dates come from the district council and the fair’s operator; the closure times for it are still to be confirmed.

Campden Road at Clifford Chambers is still cancelled. It had been listed for 11 November.

Three schemes still have no date at all:

• a second stretch of the A429 Warwick Road at Wellesbourne
• Halford Road at Pillerton Priors
• Moreton Morrell Lane at Lighthorne

The A429 through Wellesbourne is still the one to watch. Four separate resurfacing schemes land on the same corridor between 19 October and 2 November 2026, and it is the main route between Stratford and the M40 at junction 15.

Sundays in the town centre

Waterside is closed from 9am to 6pm most Sundays between Bridge Street and Sheep Street for the Waterside Upmarket, which runs across the whole 2026 season. The remaining September dates are Sundays 20 and 27 September, then every Sunday in October and four in November.

If you drive to the theatre or the riverside on a Sunday, the Bridgeway and Recreation Ground car parks are the ones to aim for rather than anything off Waterside. On 20 September, allow for both closures: the Food Festival order takes Bridge Street, Henley Street and Meer Street until 10pm.

Bidford-on-Avon’s High Street closes on the first Saturday of most months, 6.30am to 2pm, for the village market. The next one is Saturday 3 October.

The routes that matter, and the bypass that does not exist yet

Stratford has no ring road. Through traffic between the A46 and the south of the district still funnels across Clopton Bridge, a fifteenth-century structure. That is not a quirk of history; it is a stated planning constraint.

The draft South Warwickshire Local Plan is blunt about why a bypass keeps coming up. Its Policy ID.4 justification states that “highway modelling has shown that there is insufficient capacity for further significant development south of Stratford-upon-Avon town and there are a number of capacity constraints on the highway network, including the historic Clopton Bridge.”

The policy protects land within an indicative corridor for a western bypass between the A3400 Shipston Road and the A46 at the Alcester Road end of town, crossing the B439 Evesham Road and joining Campden Road south of Clifford Chambers. It would also cross the Stratford Greenway at a height that keeps open the option of putting heavy rail back on it.

Two things to be clear about. The corridor is “an area of search only and does not fix the final alignment”, and the road is required to deliver the Long Marston Airfield new community and the 2,727-home allocation south-east of town, neither of which starts building before 2030. Nobody is driving on this in this decade.

The same plan safeguards land for five smaller strategic road schemes that would land sooner and closer to home:

• the A46 junction with the A422 Alcester Road at Wildmoor
• the A46 junction with the A3400 Birmingham Road at Bishopton
• roundabout and approach widening at Shipston Road and Seven Meadows Road
• widening at M40 junction 15
• Marraway, on the A46 at Warwick Road

It also marks an area of search for a second park and ride on the southern side of town near the Rosebird Centre, with 500 spaces.

What parking costs

Stratford-on-Avon District Council runs twelve car parks with more than 2,800 spaces in the town centre, all within a five-minute walk of the middle. Charges apply 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and almost all of them are card or app only, with no cash accepted.

The first hour is free at the Bridgeway multi-storey and nowhere else. It has 650 spaces, runs on number plate recognition with no ticket, and you pay on return at a machine. Under an hour, you simply drive out and the barrier lifts. The other main town-centre options are the Recreation Ground (378 spaces, Swans Nest Lane), Arden Street (240 spaces, eight electric vehicle bays) and the Windsor Street multi-storey (243 spaces, no lifts).

Since 11 May 2026 you can pay through the National Parking Platform, which means any of APCOA Connect, Caura, JustPark, PayByPhone or RingGo rather than one mandated app. Machines still work where they exist. Each provider sets its own fees, so check the signs.

The park and ride is the cheapest way in

Stratford Park and Ride is off Bishopton Lane by the A46 and A3400 Birmingham Road roundabout, postcode CV37 0RJ, with more than 700 spaces.

• Car park: £1 for the day if you arrive from 9.00am, or £3 before 8.59am. Overnight is £4 from 9.00am, £6 before.
• Bus: £2.50 adult single or return, £1.50 child, £4.00 group return for up to five people. Buses every 15 minutes for most of the day, 10 to 12 minutes into town.
• Hours: buses from 7.30am to 6.28pm Monday to Saturday, from 10.00am on Sundays.
• Drop-off is outside NatWest on Wood Street; pick-up is opposite, outside Cancer Research UK.
• Warwickshire concessionary bus pass holders travel free after 9am on weekdays and any time at weekends. Non-Warwickshire pass holders, after 9.30am.
• Height limit 2.1m. No motorhomes, caravans or camper vans at any time. Blue Badge holders park free but still pay bus fares.

Two people parking after 9am and taking the bus both ways costs £6 in total, against £9.30 for nine hours in a town car park. For a family of four using the group return, it is £5, which is less than a single adult ticket at most of the town’s paid attractions.

One current caveat: the Park and Stride walking route along the canal towpath from the park and ride into town is closed because of a landslip. The council directs walkers along Timothy’s Bridge Road instead.

The bigger job is next to it on the trunk road: the A46 northbound between Warwick and junction 15 is closed overnight on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, 9pm to 6am, taking in the Sherbourne link road on the first night and the junction 15 exit slip and roundabout on the second.

When does Bridge Street reopen after the Food Festival?

At 10pm on Sunday 20 September. The order ran from 2pm on Friday 18 September and covers Bridge Street, Henley Street and Meer Street. The district council made the order under section 21 of the Town Police Clauses Act 1847, and wilful breach of it carries a fine of up to £1,000. The festival itself trades 10am to 6pm on the Saturday and 10am to 5pm on the Sunday.

Is there any free parking in Stratford town centre?

Only the first hour at the Bridgeway multi-storey car park. Every other council car park charges from the first hour, and charges apply 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Blue Badge holders park free at the pay and display car parks, and at Bridgeway only through Stratford ShopMobility.

How much is Stratford park and ride?

£1 to park for the day if you arrive from 9.00am (£3 before), plus £2.50 per adult for the bus, single or return. A group return for up to five people is £4.00 and a child is £1.50.

Is Stratford getting a bypass?

Not soon. The draft South Warwickshire Local Plan safeguards a corridor for a western bypass between the A3400 Shipston Road and the A46 Alcester Road, but the plan calls it “an area of search only”, the scheme “remains at an early stage”, and it is tied to development that does not start until the 2030s.

Correction, 9 September 2026. On 5 September this page said that six short closures from the August order bundle had finished, among them Elm Close at Ilmington. That was read from the expiry of the temporary order. Warwickshire’s own footway resurfacing programme still lists the Elm Close scheme as ongoing, so the closure should not have been described as finished. The entry above has been changed.

Correction, 19 September 2026. Until today this page listed Watery Lane at Sherbourne in a table captioned as closures affecting Stratford-on-Avon district. Sherbourne is in Warwick district. The closure is on the A429 between Stratford and Warwick, so it stays on the page, but it is now labelled with the district it is actually in and the table caption has been widened to cover the main routes as well as the district.

Roadworks change daily and event closures are added through the year. Check the live map before you travel, and confirm parking charges on the machine or the council’s own page. Sources rechecked 19 September 2026. Four things we could not confirm today. Warwickshire’s live roadworks map runs on one.network and needs a sign-in for its underlying data, so the closures above come from the statutory orders rather than from the map. The county published no new Stratford-on-Avon order bundle this week, so nothing here supersedes the orders of 11 September; every live notice in the Public Notice Portal’s own index of active notices was checked for this district today. National Highways gives the diversion for the A46 closures only as “via National Highways”, with no roads named. And Walton Park Road at Wellesbourne passed its anticipated completion date on 14 September and nothing published since either confirms it has reopened or extends it. The district council’s own list of road closures was last updated on 17 March 2026 and carries only the recurring markets, so the Food Festival and Mop Fair closures are sourced from the town council, the district’s own order and the county’s notices instead.
