Stratford Santa's Grotto: 21 Nov to Christmas Eve, £24 Up

Stratford’s Father Christmas sessions run from Saturday 21 November to Christmas Eve at Magic Alley, which has moved to 38 Greenhill Street and now shares a building with The Crimson Chamber. The full day by day calendar and the prices are already published.

The thing to get right before you book is that these are not per-child tickets. Magic Alley sells the whole time slot, for up to four or up to six guests, and babies and carers count towards that total.

Four different sessions, and only one of them suits every age

There are four experiences and they are not interchangeable. From Magic Alley’s own prices table:

The Classic Grotto costs £45 for four and £67 for six on December weekends and on the 21st.

Two of these are crime-solving experiences rather than straight grotto visits, which the operator’s table makes plain. Father Christmas appears in the first three. He is not in A Very Crimson Christmas at all, which the site describes as “a darker Christmas murder investigation”. If you are buying for a young child and the date you want is a Crimson day, you are buying the wrong thing.

Children choose their own present in the Classic Grotto, Crumbs and Crimson sessions, worth £10 towards something larger in the shop if they want it. In the under-5 session the gift is pre-selected, usually a colouring book, or a “Baby’s First Christmas” gift for babies, and adults do not get one.

The calendar, and the dates that matter most

Magic Alley publishes a colour-coded grid. Read across it and two deadlines fall out that are easy to miss:

• The last session for under 5s is Wednesday 16 December. There are only three of them all season: Saturday 28 November, Tuesday 15 December and Wednesday 16 December, all starting at 10.20am, per the operator’s under-5 page.
• The last Classic Grotto is Monday 21 December, morning only. The final three days, 22, 23 and 24 December, are all Christmas Crumbs, minimum age seven. There is no traditional grotto in Christmas week.

Magic Alley’s tickets page says the blank cells, and Tuesday 1 December, “may be released later in the year when we see which event has the most demand”, and that sold-out slots are hidden as they go, so an empty-looking day is not necessarily a day off.

One inconsistency in the operator’s own copy

The Magic Alley Christmas home page gives opening hours as “Monday to Sunday 10am to 8pm, Christmas Eve closing at 5.30pm”. The calendar image on the same site, uploaded in September, marks Christmas Eve “till 4.30pm”. Those cannot both be right. Take the earlier one as your planning assumption until they fix it, and if you want a Christmas Eve slot, ask when you book.

The calendar file is also named as a draft ready to finalise, which fits the three days still marked “event to be decided”.

The booking rules are strict, and they are worth reading

These are the operator’s own terms, and they are firmer than most:

• Arrive no more than five minutes early. There is no waiting area and early arrivals may be asked to come back.
• More than 15 minutes late and you will not be admitted, with no refund. Late arrival to the last slot before lunch, before the afternoon break, or at the end of the day means refused entry.
• Tickets are non-refundable unless refund protection is bought at checkout, which cannot be added afterwards.
• The slot is what you buy. If fewer people turn up than you booked for, there is no partial refund.
• Groups of seven or eight need two consecutive four-person slots. Six is a hard ceiling per slot.

Sessions run about 30 minutes for the under-5s and longer for the grotto and crime experiences.

Getting there and parking

Magic Alley is at 38 Greenhill Street, CV37 6LE, at the station end of the town centre. Its own advice is Greenhill Street or Grove House car park for the shortest walk, then Arden Street, Rother Street Civic, Windsor Street multi-storey and Bridgeway multi-storey in that order.

Two things it does not mention. Church Street is permit-only Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:00, and a Blue Badge does not get you free parking at Bridgeway. Anywhere else in the district?

Nothing else has a published 2026 date yet. Stratford Theatre Company ran a Santa’s Grotto at the Lifeways Centre, CV37 6PG on Christmas Eve last year, sold per child under 16 in 15-minute slots with a maximum of five tickets a slot, and adults free. That listing is still up on Ticket Tailor but it is dated 24 December 2025 and there is no 2026 equivalent on the company’s events list.
